hunting knivesFor the upcoming Fourth of July weekend, a childhood friend invited me up to his cabin. This seems like a great idea because the cabin sits on a river and there are hiking trails all over the place. I’ve been there many times before. Each time, we’ve been warned to carry a whistle just in case we run into a bear. Bears are just part of the forest landscape. I’ve never run into one face to face but imagine it would be one of the scariest possible scenarios. You are supposed to be as big and loud as possible if confronted with a bear but that just seems like a great way to rile it up.

So for this trip I’m bringing hunting knives as a backup.  A whistle might scare a bear away but in the event of attack, a whistle will not offer any protection. Hunting knives probably wouldn’t do much good either but I’d feel better with them on my person. I’m going to see what kind of large blade hunting knives I can find online before heading up to the cabin in a couple of weeks.
