hunting knives, belt buckleHunting is a unique experience unlike anything I’d ever been involved with. There are plenty of people who see the inhumane side of hunting prey when there are grocery stores at every corner with meat for sale but it really is not the same. I compare it to organic foods, which have become super popular since there was more coverage on all the potentially harmful factors that can occur within large scale farming. Lacing up the cowboy boots, tightening the belt buckle and going on the hunt is the freshest way to come by meats. It is completely organic. I was never against hunting at all. Never really thought much about it. There were plenty of families I grew up around that shot pheasant or tracked deer in season. It wasn’t until a local friend had me come along with him that I got to experience it for myself though.

Armed with rifles, hunting knives, GPS, maps and water, we set out in a forested terrain—one that he had used many times before. I pretty much shadowed his moves to not expose our presents accidently. The trip started by finding a position on the high ground above a well-traveled deer thoroughfare. He had some binoculars, which I used to search the terrain until accidently dropping them on jagged rocks. The fall broke the right lens so it more or less became a monocle. My buddy was not very pissed, which was a relief but he did call me “Butters” for the rest of the hunt—sort for butter fingers. After sighting and shooting a deer later on in the day, it got a little bit hairy with the hunting knives. Cutting up the carcass is a dirty job but that is where our meat comes from. I pretty much just sat back and watched the hunting knives used for their intended purpose.

This friend has a birthday coming up and I found the perfect gift in the Jewelry Tack Room at http://www.jewelrytackroom.com/. I never replaced those binoculars and figured now was better than never as soon as the Olympus 7 X 35 Trooper Binoculars popped onto my computer screen. Optics make it that much easier to get to the part where the hunting knives come out when tracking game. Deer season starts in California in August and runs through November so this is a great time for such a gift. I’m sure he is already pricing out new buck knives and camo for the opening hunt. The binoculars should take at least one thing off his gear list.
